RYA Chairman takes to the Axe

During early September the AYC officially opened its redeveloped Clubhouse. How appropriate that an AYC cadet from some 50 years ago, who is now the Chairman of the RYA, should return to Axmouth to conduct the official opening!

Chris Preston started his sailing career from Axmouth beach, ably supported by his parents Bill and Honor, local residents who took a very active role in the AYC; Bill being both a past Commodore and President. Chris’s work commitments required moving away, which also lead to a prominent amateur career in top flight sailing, from racing with the British Admirals Cup team, to trialist in the Olympic Star class.  In the background Chris became closely involved with the RYA, wishing to support sailing’s national body in return for its support to sailing. So, it gave us great pleasure when he agreed to return for the official opening.

Chris has a strong interest in classic boats and now sails a beautiful West Solent One Design Suvretta. Whilst at the Club, he couldn’t resist the opportunity of returning to his youthful days by sailing the Commodore’s Axe One Design Whimbrel – on the Axe!
