Swallow’s winter refit

AOD No.6 Swallow returned to Peter William’s yard at Bodinnick, just prior to lockdown for substantial repair work. Her ageing elm bottom boards had become brittle and it was a job keeping her afloat without constant bailing. So, Peter replaced four new elm planks each side including the garboard, and additionally on the turn of the bilge part replacement of the mahogany planking. This left the owner with a dilemma, whether to continue with the internal paint scheme or strip the remaining paint and return her to a varnished interior? After much effort the latter option became reality. Whilst in the process, the whole of the boat was stripped, both inside and out. So, she now joins the rest of the fleet in being varnished throughout – and very smart she looks!
