Round Up for 2015

This year saw the successful completion of the full AYC River Race Series – all races were sailed and this with an extended programme. Plus we have new winner of the River Shield, Malcolm Gill sailing AOD No.20 won the overall prize, a first for Malcolm who has been campaigning Shearwater for 15 years – just shows, perseverance eventually pays off!

Talking of the River Shield, the longevity of the trophy has meant that we have run out of space for applying the winners plaques. Henry Pountney has come to the rescue, over the years Henry has accumulated a wonderful store of re-cycled hardwood and being a talented woodworker, expertly crafted a new mahogany surround to provide many more years on which to display the winning names.

Shower Flow Cup

River Race 6, held just prior to the village show, has traditionally become the Shower Flow Cup race.

This year it was won by the boat rigged for the occasion, AOD 21 Tern. Morag sporting her bonnet de douche came well prepared and won the race; perhaps this will set the precedence for next year?  Well done Ken & Morag.

The AODs rounded off the season with a visit to Beaulieu in September, again the visit coincided with Bart’s Bash, and similar to last year the AODs were invited to compete in the Beaulieu River Sailing Club’s Bart’s Bash Race. Having got most the AOD fleet together (Axe & Solent divisions) we took the opportunity to combine the race with the AOD’s Jubilee Cup. This is a biennial race, resulting from the 60th Anniversary regatta in 2013.

The cup was won by Stephen Daniel and his crew Major in AOD No.6 Swallow – not sure who qualifies for the title of ‘Old Sea Dog’!
